Energy sources utilized by Vibrio fetus.

چکیده

Vibrio fetus is significant in the sheep and cattle industries because it causes abortion and infertility. However, little is known of the metabolism of this organism. Smith and Taylor (1919) described V. fetus as being relatively difficult to cultivate immediately after isolation, but after repeated transfers cultivation became less difficult. The organism produced no gas and the reaction remained neutral or slightly acid in fermented bouillon with 0.1 per cent glucose, lactose, or sucrose. A reduced oxygen tension was reported to be necessary for growth. According to Stockman (1919), V. fetus can not grow either in a free supply of air or under strictly anaerobic conditions. Plastridge and Williams (1943) found no evidence for acid production by V. fetus with arabinose, glucose, dextrin, raffinose, salicin, sucrose, sorbitol, or trehalose. This organism is apparently microaerophilic (May, 1953; Reich et al., 1956; Kiggins and Plastridge, 1956). V. fetus appears to be totally lacking in fermentative ability, and therefore is restricted to oxidative processes for obtaining energy. Since little is known of the metabolic character of microaerophilic bacteria, it was thought that a study of the compounds which could be used as energy sources would be of interest.

Vibrio cyclotrophicus sp. nov., a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading marine bacterium.

Strain P-2P44T was isolated from creosote-contaminated marine sediments by using a most-probable number procedure in which phenanthrene was the sole carbon and energy source. Growth experiments showed that P-2P44T utilized several two- and three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as substrates, including naphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene and phenanthrene. Additionally, gas-chromatograp...

Timing of Vaccination in Beef Cattle Herds

Infectious reproductive diseases have great potential to create significant damaging effects to reproductive efficiency and therefore profitability for the beef herd. Pathogens causing reproductive diseases include: bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), Leptospira, Tritrichomonas foetus, Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis (“vibrio”) and Neospora caninum, among...

Isolation of the polar and lateral flagellum-defective mutants in Vibrio alginolyticus and identification of their flagellar driving energy sources.

Vibrio alginolyticus has two types of flagella (polar and lateral) in one cell. We isolated mutants with only a polar flagellum (Pof+ Laf-) or only lateral flagella (Pof- Laf+). Using these mutants, we demonstrated that the energy sources of the lateral and polar flagellar motors in V. alginolyticus are H+ and Na+ motive forces, respectively, as in the related species V. parahaemolyticus.

Vibrio litoralis sp. nov., isolated from a Yellow Sea tidal flat in Korea.

Two Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strains, MANO22D(T) and MANO22P, were isolated from a tidal flat area of Dae-Chun, Chung-Nam, Korea. The isolates were rod-shaped and were motile by means of one or more polar flagella. They grew at 1-12 % NaCl, 4-45 degrees C and pH 4.1-8.8 and were oxidase-positive, arginine dihydrolase-negative and sensitive to the vibriostatic agent O/129...
